IV Als Anhang ist diesem Theil eine der Besprechungen beigefügt, welche CnLADNr der unter XIV abgedruckten Habilitationsschrift seines jungen Freundes hat angedeihen lassen. W. 'YEBER's Doktordissertation wird man unter den hier zusammen gestellten Abhandlungen vergebens suchen; sie ist nach dem Ergehniss von mir angestellter Erkundigungen nicht gedruckt worden und auch handschriftlich im Nachlass nicht aufgefunden. Der Titel "Theoria efficaciae laminarum maxime mobilium arcteque tubos aerem sonantem continentes claudentium" lässt mit Sicherheit schliessen, dass sie in erweiterter Form als Habilitationsschrift gedient hat. Legen die im ersten Theil vereinigten Abhandlungen Zeugniss von der andauernden Beschäftigung mit einem abgeschlossenen Gebiete der Physik ab, so geben die im zweiten Theil (Mechanik, Optik, Wärme lehre) zusammengestellten Nachricht von mehr gelegentlich und auf kürzere Zeit erfassten Problemen. Die Keime für eine grössere Entwickelung liegen hier besonders in den Abhandlungen V-v!I, in denen nach einer geistvollen Methode von GAu'ss die Erscheinungen der elastischen Nachwirkung wohl zum ersten Male einer exakten Untersuchung unterworfen sind. Ein besonderes Interesse nimmt auch die Abhandlung XVI in An spruch, in welcher der Verfasser eine · sehr sinnreiche Methode zur Beobachtung des Unterschiedes der adiabatischen und isothermischen Dilatation fester Körper mittl1eilt und anwendet, den er allerdings, noch auf dem Standpunkt der älteren Wärmetheorie stehend, wesentlich anders verwerthet, als es gegenwärtig geschieht.
