Die moderne Ästhetik hat sich in einem Prozeß der Abgrenzung herausgebildet: Das Kunstwerk muß sich nun von dem unterscheiden, was nur den »zweideutigen Beifall des großen Haufens findet« (Schiller). Bis hin zur Ästhetik Adornos und noch über ihn hinaus hat sich dieses Postulat durchgehalten. Jede Verwischung der Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Kitsch wird als Sakrileg kritisiert, als würde in der Kunst auch Theologisches verhandelt. Eben deshalb hat sich die sogenannte Postmoderne mit provokativer Lust gegen diese Grenzziehungen aufgelehnt. Im Kitsch äußert sich unverhohlen und ungeniert ein Bedürfnis nach affektiver Ansprache, nach Sinnhaftigkeit und Bedeutsamkeit. Das muß die ästhetische Moderne provozieren, die sich auf ein Geschichtsverständnis des grundsätzlichen Sinnentzugs, des Verlustes, der Trauer, der Melancholie festgelegt hat.
