James Henry Trotter is a lonely, orphaned young boy forced to live with his two cruel and abusive aunts, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge, after his parents are killed by an escaped rhinoceros. He spends his days doing exhausting chores in their dreary garden, dreaming of a better life. His fortunes change dramatically when a mysterious old man appears and gives him a bag of magical, glowing green crystals. While running toward the peach tree to bury them, James trips and spills the crystals into the soil. Soon after, an impossibly giant peach begins to grow on the barren tree. Instead of harvesting it, the aunts decide to exploit the peach for profit, charging people to see it. One night, James discovers a tunnel inside the peach, where he encounters a group of oversized, anthropomorphic insects: a Grasshopper, a Centipede, a Ladybug, a Spider, an Earthworm, a Silkworm, and a Glowworm. Together, they sever the peach from its stem and begin a wild, perilous adventure as the fruit rolls across the country and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout their journey, the unlikely crew faces numerous challenges, including a shark attack and a confrontation with the hostile Cloud-Men, who control the weather. The insects, each with distinct personalities, become a surrogate family for James, providing the love and companionship he never had. By working together and utilizing their unique skills—such as the Silkworm’s silk and the Earthworm’s ability to attract seagulls—they manage to lift the peach into the sky and travel across the globe. Eventually, the peach lands on top of the Empire State Building in New York City.
