Waste-to-Resources 2017
7. Internationale Tagung MBA, Sortierung und Recycling. Rohstoffe und Energie aus Abfällen
📘 About This Book
August.
📖 Summary
Waste-to-Resources 2017, edited by Matthias Kühle-Weidemeier, is a comprehensive scientific volume spanning 775 pages that addresses one of the most pressing systemic challenges of our modern era: the intersection of raw material supply, global consumption, and environmental limits. At its core, the book explores the vital transformation of waste management systems into resource recovery operations, driven by the inescapable reality that our global economy requires a continuous, uninterrupted stream of raw materials. This dependency is not unique to any single industrialized nation; it is a universal requirement for all countries striving to maintain economic stability and technological advancement. However, this relentless demand collides directly with the finite nature of our planet. The text highlights the stark ecological boundaries governing worldwide resource consumption, utilizing data from organizations like the Global Footprint Network to contextualize the acceleration of environmental depletion. By examining the shifting date of Earth Overshoot Day—the point in the year when humanity has consumed more ecological resources than the planet can regenerate within that same year—the book illustrates a troubling ten-year trajectory. In 2006, this threshold was crossed on the twenty-fourth of August, whereas a decade later, it had advanced significantly to the eighth of August. This alarming acceleration serves as the foundational argument for the scientific contributions compiled within the volume, emphasizing that traditional linear models of extraction, consumption, and disposal are no longer viable. Instead, the chapters delve into advanced methodologies, technological innovations, and strategic frameworks designed to recover valuable materials from waste streams, thereby closing the loop and reducing the strain on natural ecosystems. Through rigorous academic analyses, case studies, and technical evaluations, the book serves as an indispensable compendium for scientists, engineers, policymakers, and environmental professionals dedicated to forging a sustainable circular economy. It bridges the gap between theoretical environmental science and practical industrial application, detailing how waste can be systematically repurposed to secure our collective resource future.
