📘 About This Book

📖 Summary

William Betancourt invites readers on a profound intellectual journey with his 2021 work, ¿Qué es filosofía?, spanning 353 pages of rigorous philosophical inquiry. The core premise of the book challenges readers to rethink the very nature of philosophy, starting from its historical roots and its intrinsic connection to ancient Greece. Betancourt asserts that philosophy is fundamentally a creation of the Greek world, yet its evolution requires a continuous reexamination of language, culture, and human existence. The investigation begins by examining the word itself, its inscription in language, and how it emerged alongside myth and poetry to shape human understanding. Central to Betancourt's exploration is a deep dive into the thought of Heraclitus. The author focuses specifically on Fragment 35, using it as a foundational text to discuss and uncover the original meaning and essence of philosophizing. By analyzing this ancient thinker, Betancourt highlights how the earliest roots of philosophy already contained complex layers of meaning that set the stage for millennia of subsequent debate. However, the text acknowledges that even among the ancient Greeks, a single, definitive determination of philosophy was never fully reached. Understanding the discipline is an ongoing historical process. Throughout the pages of this book, Betancourt demonstrates how the comprehension of philosophy has continually transformed throughout history. He emphasizes that to truly grasp what philosophy is today, one must carefully delineate its boundaries and relationships with other domains of human thought. In particular, the author addresses the delicate and vital distinctions between philosophy, science, and worldview. By contrasting philosophical inquiry with scientific methodology and broader cultural perspectives, Betancourt clarifies the unique role that philosophy plays in human consciousness. Ultimately, the book constantly brings the reader back to the most fundamental question of all: asking after the very sense and purpose of philosophy in our lives.
